Joe has inherited the song & storytelling traditions of his family in the North Carolina Appalachians, where he still lives & works. He plays guitar & banjo. His account of life in the small village of Sodom Laurel is fascinating & often surprising. The workshop will cover 'Old Love Songs & Ballads from the Western North Carolina Mountains' & the oral tradition that preserved them. Joe will tell the stories of the 'Keepers of the Old Songs' who passed them on to him. Photographs of the landscape & the singers, along with field recordings, will paint a vivid portrait of life in this isolated part of America.
A work book with lyrics & information & a CD of field recordings will be provided for each participant.
IN THE EVENING JOE PENLAND WILL PERFORM AT THE LEWES SATURDAY FOLK CLUB
AT THE ELEPHANT & CASTLE
